Opthalmology

The Ophthalmology department of Little Flower Hospital was started in 1964. We have an average outpatientstatistics of 350 per day in this department. More than 10000 surgeries are performed in the department everyyear. We have almost all sophisticated equipments in the department. The hospital functions as a referral center For the entire state of Kerala for ophthalmic problems. At present we are having the subspecialties like Cornea Clinic, Retina Clinic, Glaucoma clinic, Pediatric Ophthalmology Unit, Squint clinic, Oculoplasty, Neurophthalmology clinic, Uvea clinic, Contact lens Clinic& Prosthetics. We are the pioneers in conducting community screening programmes in Kerala. Thousands of people benefit from our community programmes like mobile eye camps, school screening programmes, etc. Around 60% of our cataract surgeries are done at free of cost.

In the beginning there were only 5 beds for the eye department and the equipment was also not very grandiose. Now the department, which is ISO 9001-2000 certified by BSI, has attained the heights of a full-fledged institute with modern surgical facilities, sub specialty clinics and research and training facilities without losing its
commitment to the poor. It has 150 beds and out of it 70 beds are kept apart for free treatment.

In the area of Ophthalmic Service the institution has taken the initiative of organizing service through regular free eye camps, school screening progammes, peripheral eye care centers, Eye Bank as well as developing secondary and tertiary services in Ophthalmic field. Thrust is given to various training programmes also. This is recognized as one of the best ophthalmic centers in the south and is one among the 5 recipients in India; of the President’s Grant for pediatric Eye Care declared on the World sight Day 2005.
